Notes:
- The team again sold jerseys at the Convention. Jerseys sold at the Convention and at Hawkquarters were tagged with the Hawks head style set tagging, set 1, including the black alternates.
- Once ownership of Hawkquarters changed following the death of Bill Wirtz (Now called the Blackhawks Store), Hawks jerseys were no longer sold through the store. Instead, jerseys were sold via various gameworn groups and email lists. This practice continues today.
- The Hawks made the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and wore a new set of jerseys for their surprising deep playoff run.
- Jerseys not sold through Hawkquarters were yet to be tagged, and new tagging was developed including different serial numbers for each jersey. These are referred to as the Serial Numbered tags. 2nd set and playoff jerseys had Serial Numbered tagging. The Hawks retain the master list of these numbers.
- In the necks of most jerseys are a number written in black sharpie denoting the set of the jerseys. A ‘P’ in the neck was for the Playoff set. Nothing is written in the black alts.
- Nikolai Khabibulin joined the team in 05-06 and introduced the concept of changing jerseys in between periods. Going forward until present, Hawks goalies have had 3 jerseys issued to them and they change between periods. Presently, they wear the same 3 all season. In these early years, it may have been 3 jerseys per set. A few other players also wore multiple jerseys per set – Jonathan Toews starting wearing three jerseys around this timeframe.
- The black alternate jerseys made a final appearance in 08-09, this time in the Edge cut. This was the only season where the black edge jerseys were worn, and are somewhat hard to find as only one set was used (some players did wear multiples). The black alternates were worn 10 times in 08-09.
- The Blackhawks took part in the Winter Classic on 1/1/09, their first (of many) outdoor games where they played the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field. The Hawks wore a throwback to the jerseys worn in the mid-1930’s. These jerseys featured triple-color numbers, a neck tie-down and the Winter Classic logo patch on the chest. Inside the jerseys sewn in the rear hem is a Meigray inventory tag.
- Both the Hawks and Wings wore 4 jerseys for the game. This continues for ever outdoor game the league has held. The first jersey is worn in the pregame skate. That set of jerseys goes to the NHL Player’s Association. They occasionally pop up in charity auctions. The other 3 jerseys are worn one per period. One period’s jerseys go to the players. One period’s jerseys go to the team to do with whatever they want and the last jerseys go up for auction on NHL.com along with goal pucks, game pucks, etc.
- Of note, there was a promotion run by Reebok that featured one Hawk in the 2nd period whose Reebok Vector logo was covered by a black patch. When you found the player, you were able to enter in a contest. The player with the covered Vector logo was Dustin Byfuglien.
- For this game, the team got the first period jerseys and the 2nd period jerseys went to NHL.com auction. Of note, the team evidently auctioned off a few jerseys at the game in MVP events. A few other jerseys ended up at the Convention. What happened to the others from the 1st period is unknown, likely gifted to sponsors/MVPs or kept by the team.
- The Hawks wore a Winter Classic patch on their practice jerseys the day before the game when they practiced outdoors. These patches were removed after and the jerseys were continued to be used. Most future outdoor games featured practice jerseys that were worn for this event, then sold later by the team.
- The team held a season ticket holder party in December at Navy Pier. For the first couple events, a handful of game worn jerseys were auctioned. These jerseys typically did not feature set tagging and the LOA’s were different from the traditional Hawks LOA’s, some being hand-written on a form letter.
- A Shirt Off Their Back Night (SOTB) or Fan Appreciation Night jersey being given out to ‘random’ attendees of the last home game of the season. This practice continued until the early 2010’s. In some years, the jersey contained special tagging, the 08-09 jerseys are confirmed to have a Fan Appreciation set tag similar to the patch sewn in the other jerseys in this era. In all letters that have surfaced that came with these jerseys, they are worded “Congratulations on winning…” rather than “Congratulations on purchasing…”. The Hawks typically wore a new set of jerseys for the SOTB promotions, although there may have been a season or two where they were worn longer.
- Hawkquarters continued their practice of selling “Locker Room Jerseys” around this time. If there were jerseys that originated from the Hawks locker room, but they were not sure what set it was part of, or if it was a backup jersey, etc, it was sold without an LOA at a discount. Some great deals came out of the Locker Room section as many had solid wear and were later photomatched.
