Notes:
- The 87-88 season is the first time that just CCM is featured on the rear hem. That changed in the playoffs when Gunzo’s reappeared.
- The crests from 87-90 look significantly skinnier than previous years. The crests were all hand-made throughout the 80’s and it is believed the template pattern that was used broke, resulting in a different looking crest, known as the “pinhead” or “flat-face crest” (flat-faced bastard in some circles).
- The white jerseys worn in 87-88 are similar to those worn in 88-89 set 2 and 89-90. Photo matching them is the best way to determine the year.
- The reds had a very distinctive feature. The tomahawks on the shoulders of the jerseys were incorrect… the handles on the road tommies are normally green with white stones for the blade. The patches on this set of roads were the home tommies, red handles with green stones. This set of road jerseys are known as the “wrong tomahawk” set and were worn the entire regular season. Note there were a few exceptions, notably Dirk Graham wore an older style crest jersey with the correct tommies in the regular season. The reverse tommies jerseys are very sought-after by Hawks collectors.
- Research shows the reverse tommy set was not worn in the preseason. A set with the goalieman on the rear hem was used from the previous season with nameplates. For instance, the 86-87 #40 Skorodenski jerseys had the plates changed to Pang as he wore them in the 87 preseason. There are several examples of this from the 87 preseason.
- In the playoffs, a new set of jerseys were worn, these featured the correct tommies and had Gunzo’s screened on the left rear hem. See the 88-89 page for examples of these jerseys.
